Feel like a country drive going through scenic hillside Italian towns looking out over the Adriatic Sea? How about ending this drive with lunch or dinner at a family owned restaurant serving fresh local cuisine?
The Tronto in our town’s name, San Benedetto del Tronto, is the river that separates the Le Marche Region with the Abruzzo Region.
A short drive over the river takes you to a string of hills rising up from the sea moving westward to the Sibillini Mountains. Each hilltop along the way is home to a medieval town.
First will be Colonella where we’ll take a stroll and enjoy in its magnificent views that combine its classic Italian architecture with spectacular views out to the sea.
A little further up the road we’ll come to the town of Controguerra and stop for a coffee or refreshment at the historic Caffè Ricchitto.
From there we’ll be traversing the hillside of olive groves, vineyards and small farms until we arrive at Ristorante di Nonna Lea. An elegant restaurant that will treat you to warm hospitality and terrific local cuisine prepared on premise. Our hostess, Laura, will guide you through the menu to explain all the special delicacies from the Abruzzo Region.
Experience the timeless charm of Torre di Palme, one of Le Marche’s most picturesque hilltop villages. Perched high above the Adriatic coastline, this medieval hamlet offers breathtaking views and a serene atmosphere that transports you back in time.
Wander through its narrow, flower-adorned streets, where every corner reveals architectural treasures, from ancient stone walls to stunning churches like Santa Maria a Mare with its beautifully preserved frescoes. Pause to admire the panoramic vistas of the sea and the rolling hills that stretch out below, a perfect backdrop for capturing unforgettable memories.
Indulge in the village’s relaxed pace and discover its rich history and artistic heritage. Stop at a local café or trattoria to enjoy a light snack or espresso while soaking in the ambiance of this tranquil haven.
Whether you’re an avid history enthusiast, a lover of natural beauty, or simply seeking a peaceful retreat, Torre di Palme promises a delightful journey into the heart of Italy’s storied past and the splendor of Le Marche.
Only about 20 minutes away is the charming medieval town of Grottamare Alta. It has been included in the list of the 100 most beautiful towns in Italy.
From a historical and cultural prospective we have a 10th-century castle and the church of San Giovanni Battista whose walls are adorned with lovely frescoes. Additionally, Grottamare Alta is the birthplace of Pope Sixtus V born in 1521.
For ascetics we have the unspoiled cobblestone streets and homes from the classic Italian architecture. Most stunning are the spectacular views from porticos of the Teatro dell’ Arancio overlooking the sea.
Depending on the time of day, we can take a break for cappuccino, an aperitivo or a complete meal.
The city Fermo was the regional capital during the Roman Empire and then it became a capital of the Pontific State under the Vatican rule.
One of the spectacular achievements is the Roman Cisterns built 2000 years ago. These cisterns are huge! There are a total of 30 holding rooms that cover an area of over 230,000SqFt. The rooms performed several functions in addition to water storage.
The total length of cisterns is 230Ft and the floor is perfectly angled at one degree to facilitate the water movement. Each holding room served to divert water from an underground spring as well as collect rainwater. Aeration and filtration systems were developed to insure safe water storage. The Romans even invented a water repellent cement that prevented absorption and decay.
A system of underground pipes was constructed to transport water where needed, including the port which was three miles away. Ships would come to the local harbor to get a fresh water supply before embarking on their voyage.
There are plenty of other great sights to see in Fermo including a large Renaissance Piazza with inviting restaurants and ice cream shops.
